What condition is also known as whooping cough?

Whooping cough is specifically caused by an infection with the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. This condition is characterized by severe coughing fits that can lead to a distinctive "whooping" sound when inhaling. It's a highly contagious respiratory illness that primarily affects infants and young children, but individuals of all ages can contract it. The name "whooping cough" is derived from this characteristic symptom.
